The answer is ‘No’.
Ceremonies that lack the key legal element of being civil whereby a marriage certificate is issued and recognised formally in the country where the marriage took place may be deemed a “non-marriage” In such cases, the court cannot provide matrimonial relief, and the parties are treated as cohabitees. As such financial relief is very limited.
Example: Mick Jagger / Jerry Hall
Their Bali ceremony, though publicised as a wedding, was not recognised as a valid marriage in England and Wales; thus, Ms Hall could not proceed with a divorce although in her case the financial relief was hardly limited as she reportedly settled for a whopping £10 million.
